Draught beer and ale, quality food and some friendly faces all wrapped into one. What’s not to look forward to? With 3 sleeps to go until our Great British Pubs are back, I want to get the one closest to my heart booming. The Crooked Billet, Wokingham. A favourite amongst locals, and anyone who stumbles across it, I felt I should do my bit and put it on the map for those who haven’t found themselves lost down Honey Hill. I may be biased having worked there on and off for the past 4 years, that said, I don’t spend half my earnings on the food and beer we serve for nothing… So, in light of us opening this Saturday, here are 5 reasons why the Billet is a must try Pub when in the Royal County of Berkshire and what we’re doing to be Covid secure.
Without further ado, I believe a heartfelt cheers is in order, let’s have a good time and keep safe whilst doing so!
The Crooked Billet, Wokingham
Contemporary British cuisine is probably the best way to sum up the food we serve. We have the staples; Fish ‘n’ Chips, Ploughman’s, and even a Calves Liver with Bacon and Bubble & Squeak for you traditionalists, all combined with our own take on British tapas. A mini Sausage Roll, Scotch Egg and Pork Pie just to whet your appetite. From our light bites such as the likes of the famous Suffolk Chorizo and Potatoes, to the Suet Crust Pie which has a different flavour each day, the food is packed full of flavour, goodness, and that all important love that makes good food, great!
We serve a wide variety of Beers, from Lager to Ales, with a Guest one always on offer to keep things interesting, and of course, I can’t forget the Gin! The Billet is home to 15 Gins these days and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more arrive in the coming months. I’d say you could call us a Gin bar but I wouldn’t want to discount our Reds, Whites, Rosés and all those other spirits which hold their own place behind the bar! Pretty much, whatever tickles your pickle, we will have in abundance with plenty of scope for the fancy pants stuff – Silent Pool Gin glasses are almost as pretty as the place itself!
If there is a pub out there that lays claim to a great beer garden but not a fantastic atmosphere then they’re going wrong somewhere. With a few months of Summer left to play with we will be taking bookings for our gloriously lovely beer garden, as well as the Bar for the first time due to current circumstances. This means you get all the fun and atmosphere of the pub, whilst revelling in the table service that is universal these days.
I think the fact that the Billet work force is made up of so many people who have worked there for years is a testament to a few things. One our love for the pub, two our bosses, Jo and Howard (as well as Jasper, our Rhodesian Ridgeback who is King of the Pub) and three the relationships we get to establish with you, our customers. There isn’t a staff member who doesn’t love to chat, so we do our very best to make everyone feel welcome.
To those of you who haven’t visited us before, hello, and we hope to meet you soon! And to those who we hear before we see, or more specifically the certain local who has a tendency to shout ‘SHOP!’ at the top of his lungs if we’ve neglected him for a nanosecond on the bar, we can’t wait to see you all too, it’s been far too long.
The good old English Pub experience!
I was a firm believer pre-Covid that we had a super cute little set up. However, since then Jo and Howard (a.k.a. the big bosses) have used lock-down to give the place a little spruce up. With some finishing touches completed by the staff in the week just gone, we’re good to go. It’s magic what a little splash of paint and re-fluffed cushions can do… oh, and a few talented young women with a new found passion for upholstery. If English pub is what you want, it is English pub you will get!
